When one thinks about nutrients, vitamin B is usually on the list. But there are eight kinds of Vitamin B:

  • Thiamin (B1),
  • Riboflavin (B2),
  • Niacin (B3),
  • Pantothenic Acid (B5),
  • Vitamin B6,
  • Biotin (B7),
  • Folate (B9), and
  • Vitamin B12.

All these vitamin Bs are important, but we will specifically talk about Vitamin B9, Folate. You may feel that you are getting enough Vitamin B9, yet you still experience symptoms of its deficiency. It may be your DNA, but it’s most likely your may be your MTHFR gene.

The MTHFR gene is responsible for converting folate into the active form. Folate plays an active role in:

  • DNA synthesis and repair,
  • cell division,
  • healthy pregnancies, and
  • the synthesis of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin.

The process is also known as methylation.

Your environment, including your diet and stress exposure, is known to affect this process. Poor methylation can lead to cardiovascular disease, poor foetal development, mood disorders, DNA damage, and more. However, more research is needed to confirm the true impact of the MTHFR gene mutation on one’s health.

Do not worry. There are some ways you can reduce these risks and the symptoms of the MTHFR gene mutation:

  • B vitamin supplements (especially B4, B9, and B12), magnesium and zinc.
  • Eat more green leafy vegetables, beetroot, whole grains, and seafood.
  • Avoid smoking and high alcohol consumption.
  • Improve your digestive system to avoid malabsorption and low stomach acid.
  • Of course, folic acid supplementation.
  • Consult a medical professional, especially if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.
